Cracking the Code: Real Estate Terms You Need to Know (+ Grab My Free Easy-to-Read Dictionary!)

Stepping into the world of real estate can feel a little like learning a whole new language. Whether you’re shopping for your dream home or preparing to sell a place filled with memories, the terms people throw around can be… a lot. Ever heard “escrow,” “contingencies,” or “closing costs” and thought, You’re not alone, and I’ve got you.

Why Real Estate Has Its Own Language

Think of real estate like a big, busy neighborhood every street, step, and process has its name. Agents, lenders, and inspectors use these terms every day, but for buyers and sellers, it can feel overwhelming. Understanding the basics helps you ask better questions, feel more confident, and avoid last-minute surprises.

Key Terms Every Buyer & Seller Should Know

Appraisal: A professional’s opinion of a home’s value, usually required by your lender.
Closing Costs:All the fees due at the end of the transaction (title work, lender fees, taxes, etc.).
Contingency: A condition that must be met for the sale to move forward like inspection or financing.
Escrow: A neutral third party that safely holds funds and documents until everything is complete.
MLS (Multiple Listing Service): The database agents use to share and view property listings.
Pre-Approval: A lender’s written confirmation of how much you qualify to borrow.
Title: Proof of legal ownership of the home, verified before closing.

And trust me this is only scratching the surface. The real estate world is full of terms and abbreviations that can impact your decisions and your bottom line.
